  • Does my student need to have music experience in order to join band?
No! Incoming 6th graders do not need to have any prior music experience in order to join the group. If you are joining the Marching Band/Symphonic band, you DO need at least two years of experience on a band instrument.
  • Can my 6th grade student join the choir?
Choir is only offered to 7th and 8th graders. If they want to learn about music, they can try band in 6th grade and then can possibly switch to choir in 7th grade.
  • Do you teach string instruments and/or piano?
We do not have a strings program at the moment. The only instruments that are taught are wind instruments and percussion. Students in marching band/symphonic band can get a chance to play piano if they join our indoor drumline later in the school year.
  • Can my student switch instruments?
It depends on the situation. For example: The instrumentation of the group and if there are enough instruments. If the student is a beginner, then there is a higher chance they can switch if it turns out they don’t like their original instrument. If the student is in 8th grade, it will be too late. The student cannot switch instruments every year. If the switch is within the same family, it is easier to switch than if it were a completely different instrument. For example, clarinet to saxophone is an easier switch than trumpet to flute. So it all depends on the situation and must be approved by the director. If you have more questions about switching instruments, please feel free to contact the director.
  • Can my student borrow an instrument?
Yes, of course!! Our goal at Ollivier is to provide every music student with an instrument and the materials they need to succeed.
  • Can my student buy/use their own instrument?
Yes, if that is what you would like to do, but it is NOT required. It is highly suggested to talk to the director before buying an instrument, so that he can recommend a good product. Yes, you can use your own instrument if you already have one, and if it is in good condition. Check with director for approval.
  • Is it required for students to stay in band for all three years?
It is not required, but it is HIGHLY suggested. Students will get to experience something different each year, which will allow them to grow as a musician and individual.
